Disc Golf Glossary

Discs

The primary equipment used in disc golf, typically grouped into three types:

Drivers – Built for distance, with sharper edges and faster flight
Midranges – Designed for control and moderate distance
Putters – Used for short, accurate throws and finishing into the basket


Throw Types

Backhand – Thrown with the back of the hand facing forward; the most common style
Forehand (Sidearm) – Thrown with the palm facing forward
Hyzer – A throw that follows the disc’s natural fade (left for right-handed backhand)
Anhyzer – A throw that moves opposite the disc’s natural fade
Roller – A throw intended to roll along the ground


Scoring

Par – Expected number of throws to complete a hole
Birdie – One throw under par
Eagle – Two throws under par
Ace – A hole-in-one
Bogey – One throw over par


Course Terms

Hole – A single target, from tee pad to basket
Fairway – The intended path to the basket
OB (Out of Bounds) – Restricted areas that add a penalty stroke
Lie – The spot where the disc lands, marking the next throw


Flight Terms

Stable – Flies relatively straight
Overstable – Finishes strongly in the direction of fade
Understable – Turns more easily and resists fading early


Gameplay

Tee Off – The first throw from the tee pad
Putt – A short throw aimed at the basket
Up and Down – Reaching the basket and finishing in one sequence
