Build Your Own First Disc Golf Set

Prefer to choose your own discs? Start with one comfortable putter, one controllable midrange and one easy-to-throw fairway driver. These three discs will cover nearly every shot you need while learning the game.

Choose one disc from each section below to build your set.

What Does Each Disc Do?

Putter: Designed for putting, short throws and controlled approaches. It is the slowest and easiest type of disc to control.

Midrange: Provides more distance while maintaining accuracy. A beginner-friendly midrange can handle many of your throws while you learn.

Fairway driver: Adds distance without requiring the speed and power of a distance driver. Beginners should generally start with lighter, understable fairway drivers.

You only need three discs to begin: one putter, one midrange and one fairway driver. A complete starter set provides these together, while building your own lets you choose the exact models and plastics you prefer.

Beginner Disc Golf FAQ

How many discs do I need to start?

Three discs are plenty: one putter, one midrange and one beginner-friendly fairway driver. You can also begin with only a putter and midrange.

Should I buy a starter set or individual discs?

A starter set is the easiest and most affordable option. Choosing individual discs gives you more control over the models, plastics, weights and colours.

What disc weight is best for beginners?

Many adults do well with putters and midranges around 165–175 g and fairway drivers around 150–170 g. Lighter discs are generally easier for children and lower-powered players to throw.

Do beginners need a distance driver?

No. High-speed distance drivers are harder to throw properly. A beginner-friendly fairway driver will usually provide better distance and control.

Do I need a disc golf bag?

No, but a small bag makes carrying discs, water and accessories considerably easier.

What does “understable” mean?

For a right-handed backhand throw, an understable disc tends to move right during the faster part of its flight. This often helps beginners achieve straighter flights and more distance.
